Self-Portraits in Motion by Morimura Yasumasa
For the very first time in Singapore, internationally acclaimed Japanese artist, Morimura Yasumasa will be holding his first solo exhibition at the Ikkan Art Gallery.
Based on the theme, “The men of the 20th century”, the Requiem series highlights the history and its significance on construction, war and destruction during this period. Yasumasa brings the works to life by using old news photographs of various events or famous people such as Vladimir Lenin, Adolf Hitler, Mao Zedong and Albert Einstein, coupled with self-portrait techniques.
One of the notable works includes a 23-minute video titled “Gift of Sea: Raising a Flag on the Summit of the Battlefield”. Yasumasa also re-hashes the historic news photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, transforming it into a dream-like story in which he dressed up as Marilyn Monroe and also as a Japanese soldier and artist.
